Sewing has been a passion of mine for a while now. I wish so much that I would have turned to places like this when I first started…it would have saved me SO much frustration!! Let’s learn how to make this easy knotted baby hat out of knit fabric!
Supplies Needed
- Basic Sewing Machine or Serger
- Ballpoint Needles
- 7/8 Yard Knit Fabric, ideally Cotton/Spandex with 4-way stretch
- Matching all-purpose thread
- Scissors or Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat
- Pins or Clips
- Sewing Pattern, I used the hat from Petite Stitchery & Co’s Hello World Collection
First Things First
The first thing we’ll want to do to get started is to purchase and print your pattern, read the assembly instructions and put your pieces together.
Then, we’ll take our paper pattern pieces and lay them out on our fabric to cut. You can use something
You’ll need to cut one band and 2 of the top hat piece. Don’t forget to mark the half way point on your band!

Place right sides together and sew or serge around the edges of the top hat piece. For the band, place right sides together and sew along the short edge.

*If you’re using a regular sewing machine, please make sure to use a stretch stitch or a zig-zag. This will allow the seams to stretch with the fabric without breaking.
With your band, fold it in half now with wrong sides together. Insert it inside your hat (which is still inside out), aligning the raw edges, then line up the seam and your half way mark with the side seams of the hat. Sew or serge together.

Now turn your hat right side out, tie your knot at the top, and admire it… how sweet it is and how quickly it came together!!
